Kanawa Island, Komodo: easy snorkelling, and honestly not on our routes
Updated 10 October 2026
Kanawa is a small island west of Rinca with white sand and shallow coral, an easy first snorkel about 60 to 90 minutes from Labuan Bajo. It is not on any Vinca route card. If it matters to you, ask the desk before booking; we do not promise a swap.
What Kanawa is, and what it is not
Kanawa is a small island west of Rinca, with white sand beaches and shallow coral reefs. The reef sits one to six metres below the surface, with a mild current, which makes it an easy first snorkel for people who have never worn a mask.
It is not on our standard routes. Our 1D, 2D1N, 3D2N and 4D3N route cards do not stop at Kanawa, and we will not pretend they do. It is also not a quiet corner of the park: it is popular with day trips and busy in high season, so July and August see the most boats.
It is not a dragon site, a viewpoint or a place with any climbing. The stop is sand, water and fish, which suits some trips and not others.

What it is not: not on the standard Vinca routes
What you would see, and when
The reef is shallow and forgiving: coral heads, reef fish and clear water on a calm day. Midday is the best window, when light reaches the bottom. Shade on the beach is limited, so bring a hat and reef-safe sunscreen.
Visibility follows the season. It is high in April to June and September to November, and lower in January and February. Because the reef is shallow, wind and swell show up quickly as cloudy water.
For many guests, Kanawa's value is that it is easy. A family with a first-time snorkeller, or a guest who found Manta Point's current too much, is the audience. If you want that gentle water on a Vinca route, Pink Beach on every route and Taka Makassar on the longer ones do a similar job.
How a Vinca trip could reach it
It does not, as a published stop. The leg from Labuan Bajo to Kanawa is about 60 to 90 minutes, the same order as Kelor, but no route card places it. The 1D already returns at 20:00 and the 2D1N between 18:00 and 19:00, so there is no slack for another stop without removing one.
On a private charter you can ask the desk about changing the plan. We would tell you what leaves the route to make room, because that is the honest trade. We do not guarantee the request, and the captain can refuse for weather, time or park reasons.
The open trip is a fixed 3D2N with fixed stops. Do not book it expecting Kanawa.
If Kanawa is essential, a different operator may be the better choice, and we would say so.

Weather and crowds if you go
Kanawa is not tide-dependent. Weather and crowds are the variables. Wind and swell make the shallow reef murky, and the wet months, December to March, bring showers that reduce visibility.
Crowds peak in July and August, and in those months the beach and the nearby water can feel full by midday. If you go on any boat, arrive early, or choose October or November.
Our advice for a guest who wants Kanawa on a Vinca trip: tell the desk when you ask for the quote, name the stop you would give up, and accept that the answer may be no. A clear no on day one is better than a vague yes on day three.
For context, the same easy water is on our routes elsewhere. Pink Beach is on all four, and Sebayur is on the 3D2N and 4D3N. Neither is Kanawa, but both give a shallow, forgiving reef.
Fixed dates, mostly Mondays and Fridays. Not every Monday or Friday runs.
FAQ
Is Kanawa on the Vinca 3D2N route?
No. The 3D2N covers Sebayur, Manta Point, Taka Makassar, Padar, Pink Beach, Komodo, Pimpe, Kalong and Kelor. Kanawa is on none of our 4 route cards. Ask the desk if you want to discuss a private charter variation, and expect an honest answer about what would leave the route.
Could Kanawa fit into a one-day trip?
Not on the published 1D, which already returns at 20:00 after Padar, Pink Beach and Komodo. The leg from Labuan Bajo to Kanawa is about 60 to 90 minutes each way, so adding it means dropping a stop. Ask the desk about a private charter and expect an honest trade-off.
Is Kanawa good for beginners?
Yes. The reef is shallow, 1 to 6 metres, the current is mild, and the level is rated for all snorkellers. Pink Beach on our routes offers similar conditions, with depths of 1 to 8 metres, and it is on every route we run. Life jackets are provided for every guest.
Can we swap a stop for Kanawa on a charter?
You can ask. The desk will say which stop leaves the route to make room, since the 1D and 2D1N have no slack. We do not guarantee a swap, and the captain can decline for weather, time or park reasons.
When is Kanawa busiest?
July and August, when day trips fill the beach. The island is popular with day boats at any time of year, and its crowd level is rated high in high season. October and November are calmer and quieter, and an early start of 08:00 or so beats the day boats.
